Billy is 10 years old. He loves his Father very much; he is a daddy’s boy. He was always with him. They had planned to go to the zoo today, and Billy had been looking forward to it for days. So, it was a great disappointment when his daddy got a telephone call early that morning. Something happened at his office, and he had to go to work
“But you promised.,” Billy said.
“No, Billy, we planned to go, and we will, but sometimes we must change our plans. This is one of those times. It’s a pretty day for you to play outside. Have fun while I go take care of this.” Daddy hugged Billy as he left.
Even with his Daddy’s consoling hug, Billy complained as soon as the door closed. Billy went to the closet and got his daddy’s new cowboy boots. Of course, they did not fit him. He had been told not to play with them. But he would show him. He said to have fun.
He stomped around the living room. Kicking his feet and saying, “he did promise, he did promise, I know he did ...period!”
His mother entered the room and saw him wearing his daddy’s boots. “Billy, you know daddy told you not to wear his boots; take them off right now!”
“I don’t like these old boots anyway,” he said. With a quick kick, the boots flew off his feet. The crash of broken glass followed this. To his horror, he realized that the boot had broken the very expensive glass in the front door. It wasn’t just ordinary glass; it was the glass with the Texas star right in the middle. It was also his daddy’s favorite thing about the house.
“OH! He cried. What will I tell daddy when he comes home?” He ran to the door and started picking up the broken glass. He picked up a big piece; it suddenly slipped out of his hand, leaving a bad cut. Billy’s mother put antiseptic on the cut and wrapped the hand with a clean bandage. Then she sent him to his room. He was sorry he had acted so foolishly. Billy just knew that his daddy would never love him anymore.
It was terrible to hear the door open and his Father’s voice; “What happened to the door?” Billy could tell by his voice that he was upset about it. What could he say? Daddy was coming up the steps now. Usually, Billy was very happy and excited to hear those footsteps, but not today.
He knew he was in trouble. The door opened, and there he was. Looking at his father, he saw love and concern, not anger. “Mom said you cut your hand picking up the glass; I came to make sure you were all right.” Billy learned several lessons that day. However, the biggest lesson that has lasted a lifetime is that his daddy loved him no matter what.
God, our Father in Heaven, loves us the same way. (This is a true story, I was Billy) … Pastor Jerry
